Nikolas Schöll

Nikolas, a German citizen, holds a Bachelor of Science in Economics of the University of Mannheim. During his studies, he spent a semester at the Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management (ULB). Prior to joining Bruegel, Nikolas worked as an intern at the German Federal Ministry of Economics and he worked as a research assistant at an experimental field project on micro insurance on the Philippines organized by the University of Mannheim and the University of St. Gallen.

His main research interests include economic policy, European macroeconomics, and development economics.

He is fluent in English, Spanish and German and has a good knowledge of French.

Balance of trade adjustment in the euro area

The balance of trade of most crisis countries has improved substantially since the beginning of the financial crisis in 2007. The data shows that increasing exports at current prices as well as in volumes played an important role in the adjustment process.
