Expertise: International Economy, Energy Systems, Climate Change Action

Mark Huberty joined Bruegel as a visiting fellow in October 2010. He is a doctoral candidate at the University of California, Berkeley, and a research associate at the Berkeley Roundtable on the International Economy.  While at Berkeley, he has worked with the Copenhagen Climate Council and Monday Morning on their initiatives connected to the COP-15 climate negotiations.

At Bruegel, Mark has focused on evaluation of the prospects for success for EU industrial policy in renewable energy. He is now starting a new project on the determinants of success in "green" innovation and the institutional foundations of comparative advantage.

Prior to his doctoral work, Mark consulted for international firms at A.T. Kearney and Accenture. He holds degrees in chemistry (Harvey Mudd
College) and international relations (The Johns Hopkins University - SAIS).

Mark's research covers the political economy of energy systems and the connection between climate change action, innovation, and economic growth.

A scaleable approach to emissions-innovation record linkage

PATSTAT has patent applications as its focus. This means it lacks information on the applicants and/or the inventors. In order to have more information on the applicants, we link PATSTAT to the CITL database.

Working Paper

A flexible, scaleable approach to the international patent 'name game'

The inventors in PATSTAT are often duplicates: the same person or company may be split into multiple entries in PATSTAT, each associated to different patents. In this paper, we address this problem with an algorithm that efficiently de-duplicates the data.

The great transformation: decarbonising Europe’s energy and transport systems

Economic growth in Europe will be affected by the costs of this transition from the current energy and transport system. A smooth transition towards a low-carbon energy and transport system could come at comparatively modest cost. Bruegel is contributing to this debate with this report, which is based on research that received funding from the Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking.

Green exports and the global product space: Prospects for EU industrial policy

We test if and where industrial policy to promote ‘green’ industry development can improve competitiveness in export markets. Proponents of ‘green growth’ have argued that domestic promotion of ‘green’ energy will generate improved comparative advantage in export markets for high-technology goods such as wind turbines or solar cells. If this holds depends on if domestic […]
