Hannah, a German citizen, holds a Master’s degree in International Economic Studies with a specialization in Social Economics and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Maastricht University. During her studies, she spent a semester at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and one semester at RWTH Aachen.

Hannah’s research interests broadly fall within Social and Public Economics, European Macroeconomics, and Policy Research. She is fluent in German and English and has good knowledge of Spanish and Dutch.

German wages grow faster than euro area average – Spring 2013 Review

In December 2012 we published a blog post reporting that German wage growth rates (year-over-year comparison) for 2012 had been higher than the Eurozone average, with at that time, 2.5 percent versus 1.7 percent. In the meantime the annual rates for nominal wage and salary growth have been published showing that the difference has increased; German wage growth of 3 % compared to a 1.8 percent increase of the euro area.

German wages grow faster than euro area average

In 2012 German wages increased faster than in the rest of the European Union. In the first quarter German nominal wages and salaries increased by 2.1 percent compared to the same quarter in 2011 whereas they grew 1.6 percent in the euro area and 1.5 percent in the whole EU27 (year-over-year). During the second quarter of 2012 year-over-year growth rates increased a little more with nominal wages rising by 2.5 percent in Germany compared to 1.7 percent in the euro area and 1.9 percent in the EU27.
